Auto Grid & Level Dimensions

Creates overall and segmented Grid and Level dimensions from actual Revit datum references, with automatic or manual placement, configurable offsets and separate dimension styles.

Auto Grid & Level Dimensions conceptual interface

Overview

Auto Grid & Level Dimensions is a Revit annotation automation add-in for producing coordinated Grid and Level dimension strings in the active view. It can automatically collect visible straight datums or let the user manually select the Grids or Levels to dimension and pick the overall dimension position. The tool groups parallel datums, uses actual Revit Grid or Level references for dimension creation, and bases automatic placement on the visible datum endpoints rather than using the crop boundary as the dimension reference. For each valid datum group it can create both a segmented chain dimension and an overall dimension, with configurable end placement, independent chain and overall Dimension Styles, a signed overall offset from the datum end, and a separate chain offset that can run inward or outward. Grid and Level controls are configured independently, and the last-used settings are stored in JSON for repeatable documentation workflows.

Key features

  • Automatic Grid dimensioning from visible straight Grids in the active view
  • Manual Grid selection with user-picked overall dimension position
  • Automatic Level dimensioning from visible Levels in section/elevation views
  • Manual Level selection with user-picked overall dimension position
  • Parallel datum grouping before dimension creation
  • Uses actual Revit Grid and Level references for dimensions
  • Automatic placement based on visible datum endpoints rather than crop boundaries
  • Creates segmented chain dimensions
  • Creates overall dimensions
  • Grid placement at both ends, start/left/bottom only, or end/right/top only
  • Level placement at both left and right, left only, or right only
  • Separate Grid chain and Grid overall Dimension Style selectors
  • Separate Level chain and Level overall Dimension Style selectors
  • Configurable chain offset from the overall dimension
  • Signed overall offset from the datum end, including inward or outward placement
  • Chain direction control for inward Auto or outward Reverse placement
  • Saved JSON settings for modes, placements, offsets, direction and selected Dimension Styles
  • Reports created Grid/Level groups and dimensions and skips curved or non-linear datums
WORKFLOW

How the plugin fits into production

  1. 01

Open a valid cropped Revit plan, section or elevation view

  2. 02

Launch Auto Grid & Level Dimensions from the annotation tools

  3. 03

Choose whether to run Grid dimensions, Level dimensions, or both

  4. 04

Choose Auto or Manual mode independently for Grids and Levels

  5. 05

Configure end placement, chain/overall Dimension Styles, offsets and chain direction

  6. 06

For Manual mode, select at least two Grids or Levels and pick the overall dimension position

  7. 07

Run the generator to group parallel datums and create chain and overall dimensions

  8. 08

Review the completion report for created dimensions, skipped datums and notes

  9. 09

Adjust settings if needed; the last-used configuration is saved to JSON for the next run

Interested in Auto Grid & Level Dimensions?

Currently under development and controlled testing. The active view must have Crop View enabled because the crop coordinate system is used for sorting and positioning, but the crop boundary is not used as the dimension reference. Generated Grid and Level dimensions should be reviewed for datum grouping, side placement, selected Dimension Styles and offset direction before formal project issue. Curved or non-linear datums are skipped.
