Model Cleanup Manager

Scans Revit models for unused standards, views, filters, imported content and other model-health issues, then provides a controlled workflow to review, locate, report and clean selected items.

Model Cleanup Manager conceptual interface

Overview

Model Cleanup Manager is a Revit API QA/QC add-in designed to help BIM teams review and clean project models in a controlled manner. Rather than performing a broad automatic purge, the tool scans the project for specific categories of unused, redundant or potentially problematic content and presents the findings for review. Users can search and filter detected items, locate relevant elements in the model, select individual cleanup candidates, apply safety controls and perform targeted cleanup operations. The tool distinguishes between different Revit cleanup conditions—for example, deleting an unused project filter definition versus removing a filter assignment from a view's Visibility/Graphics settings—so cleanup can follow the correct Revit workflow. Destructive operations are performed through Revit transactions and can be reversed using Revit Undo.

Key features

  • Comprehensive model-health scanning — inspect multiple categories of unused or redundant Revit content.
  • Unused View Template detection — identify templates no longer assigned to project views.
  • Project Filter cleanup — identify and remove unused definitions from Manage > Filters.
  • Visibility/Graphics filter review — separately identify filter assignments applied to views and templates.
  • Unused view-type detection — review redundant or unused view types.
  • CAD import and link review — identify imported or linked CAD content for controlled cleanup.
  • Graphics standards cleanup — review unused line patterns, line styles, fill patterns and filled-region types.
  • Annotation standards cleanup — detect unused text, dimension, tag and generic-annotation types.
  • Family/type review — identify unused detail-item and model-family types.
  • Spatial-data checks — identify unplaced Rooms, Areas and Spaces.
  • View and sheet checks — locate empty views, views not placed on sheets and empty sheets.
  • Project-standard checks — review unused Scope Boxes, unnamed Reference Planes and unused Materials.
  • Naming QA/QC report — detect duplicate or inconsistent naming conditions without automatically deleting them.
  • Imported CAD line-style review — identify line styles introduced through CAD imports.
  • Show in Model — navigate from a cleanup result back to the relevant Revit element or condition.
  • Search and result limiting — filter large result sets and control the maximum number of rows loaded into the interface.
  • Protected prefixes — preserve project or office standards using configurable protected naming prefixes.
  • Pinned-CAD protection — optionally prevent pinned CAD items from becoming cleanup candidates.
  • Dry Run mode — review the intended cleanup before applying changes.
  • CSV reporting — export cleanup findings for QA/QC records or further review.
  • Undoable Revit transactions — destructive cleanup operations are performed within Revit transactions.
WORKFLOW

How the plugin fits into production

  1. 01

Open and Save the Model — open the Revit project and save or back up the model before major cleanup.

  2. 02

Run Model Cleanup Manager — launch the QA/QC cleanup interface.

  3. 03

Select a Cleanup Module — choose the required review category, such as View Templates, Filters, Views, CAD Imports, Materials or other standards.

  4. 04

Scan the Model — allow the tool to identify applicable unused or cleanup candidates.

  5. 05

Search and Review Results — filter the list and inspect candidate information before taking action.

  6. 06

Locate Items — use Show in Model where applicable to visually verify the selected candidate.

  7. 07

Apply Safety Controls — use protected prefixes, pinned-CAD exclusions and other safeguards as required.

  8. 08

Select Cleanup Candidates — choose only the items approved for cleanup.

  9. 09

Dry Run / Export Report — review the intended changes or export the findings to CSV when needed.

  10. 10

Execute Cleanup — perform the approved Revit cleanup operations.

  11. 11

Re-scan and QA/QC — run the relevant checks again to verify the model condition after cleanup.
